Thanks so much for your interest in the upcoming group!
Let me tell you more about it . . .
One of my earliest mentors used to say:
"Learn great techniques and build a toolbox full of clinical tools. But always remember that the most crucial aspect of your work is the person who’s reaching for the tools, and deciding how to use them.”
The aim of the process group is focused squarely on developing the person who’s reaching for the tools.
As you learn to bring yourself into a clearer relationship with yourself personally, you’ll naturally be able to have a clearer relationship with your clients AND you’ll be more adept at seeing where they hedge in their connection to themselves.
The process group is based on two precepts:
1. our process with ourselves is the most fertile place to develop clearer insight with clients’ process
2. developing our self-reflection, theoretical understanding and ability to ‘track’ what’s going on in our own process helps us hone our ability to more deftly track clients’ processes.
In this process, we want to teach ourselves to look at the “edges” in ourselves – the places where we’re not as clear as we’d like to be. **The focus is simply on noticing. We’re not trying to get somewhere; we’re just trying to see more, and see clearly. Prompts focus on things like honesty, anxiety and vulnerability – the prompts include some reflection, then questions that will point you to various ways of taking the topic ‘further.’
Working in this way, you’ll build a much greater tolerance for engaging with your own process (no matter how disappointed, surprised or embarrassed you might be with what you observe about yourself). Again, the focus is squarely on noticing, tolerating and owning more of who you are; this has an inherently grounding, expanding, steadying effect on your sense of self.
Your primary responsibilities are:
1. Engage yourself fully with each prompt. Watch carefully. Take note. Be curious. Keep yourself fully engaged. Avidly “work” the concept for that particular week. This isn’t about hammering out a new self or making big changes, this is about noticing and allowing yourself to see more about yourself. That’s much more important than pushing for change.
2. Be willing to discuss what you’ve learned about yourself and your patterns. Come ready to share and be curious with others.
We’re aiming to be more skillful at harnessing the natural, unfolding process that life offers us, learning to attend to it and “read” it for the deepest information it carries. Our work with clients will expand accordingly.
